EMBELLISHMENT: FLOSSING BY JILL HOVERMAN
[ORDER PAGE. Updated 4/17/15]

INTRODUCTION:

Our talented corsetiere Jill Hoverman specializes in this lovely embellishment typical of Victorian corsets. In those times flossing served a functional purpose of securing the bones at the top and bottom of the bone casings, while today, flossing is more of an artistic element of corset design. FLOSSING DESIGNS POSSIBLE:

Jill provides four designs or styles of flossing:

  • Arrow
(pictured right on ivory linen 1877 corset with brown outer bone casings and ivory flossing thread, and below bottom row on brown linen longline Edwardian corset with ivory flossing thread)
  • Normal or short "X"
(pictured below i second row on light blue linen corset with white flossing thread)
  • Elongated "X"
(pictured below in bottom row right in closeup of ivory cotton corset with yellow flossing thread
  • Diagonal line facing right
  • Diagonal line facing left
  • Shark's tooth
(pictured below on this page, on the black corset with purple thread).

PLACEMENT OF FLOSSING:

You may elect to have flossing applied at the top, bottom, or both perimeters of the corset.

You may also elect to have the flossing applied to the bone channels that show via stitching, on our standard inner-boned corsets. Examples of this application would be the black corset below pictured with purple shark's tooth flossing, and all other images below excepting the ivory corset with brown outer bone casings.

As an alternative and for a moderate upcharge, you may order your corset with outer bone channels (pictured in the ivory corset with brown outer bone casings) and then have flossing applied to those outer bone casings.

COLOR OF FLOSSING THREAD:

Flossing thread that contrasts in color from the fabric of the corset (or the fabric of the outer bone casings) makes this interesting historical feature stand out. A highly contrasting color of thread will be quite dramatic, as pictured in the white linen corset. A lesser contrasting color will be more subtle, as pictured below bottom row in the ivory cotton corset with yellow flossing.

You may also elect to send us the thread that you desire to be used; please inquire about yardage based on your design.
