WHAT IS "TIGHT-LACING?
I seriously doubt that a single definition is possible for
term, one that is bandied about on the web today
thoughtful and "newbie" corset enthusiasts. A single
is likely impossible
because the term means
different things to different people.
It's a term commonly associated with people
who wear corsets that much we can say. Other than that,
the best statement I've heard on the matter hearkens
back to Supreme Court Justice Potter (I believe it was he)
his famous comment on pornography: "Tight lacing is
like pornography -- I can't define it, but I
know it when I see it!"
Chapter 13 of my original Corset Magic repeated
in our 2016 updated book, explore several reasonable
definitions and their bases, promoted by fashion historian
and corset-enthusiasts alike. After much consideration
of those definition, here is the one that makes most
sense to us:
Tight-lacing is the process of wearing a corset that is considerably
smaller than the natural waist size, typically a corset that constricts
the waist at least four inches or more, where the corset is of such
quality, comfort, and seasoning that it can be worn every day for
six or more continuous hours, and where the ultimate restriction
coupled with the period of wear is perceived as very challenging to
the wearer, rather than easy.
What do you believe is the definition? Are the individuals
pictured below on this page, "tight-lacers" --
