OVERBUST VICTORIAN (1877 and 1891 STYLES)
****Style Advisory: Amazingly excellent value at
low price offering not-often-seen artistic options, for
a gentle hourglass-plus-U-shaped, period-perfect corset
in four fabric layers. Great choice for historical
re-enactments. This corset may not create the natural
bosom shape required for foundation wear since it is a
push-up style. It does not provide
the proper underbust hourglass silhouette required for
serious waist training.****
This classic overbust Victorian style has a true "period"
feel when produced
in linen (not often seen and rather unique for corsets)
or cotton twill as Victorian corsets often were, and
when traditional flossing is ordered (embroidery at the
ends of the bone
casings, originally used to secure the bones; today
used more for aesthetic reasons). Lovely in cotton,
linen, or our fine cotton-backed satin seen
here: Classic Line Fabrics.
Embroidered lace at the upper edge adds a pleasant
traditional touch as well.
There are two style versions of
this corset: Style A - 1877 is represented by the red silk
corset seen right top, while Style B - 1891 is represented by
the pink plaid silk corset seen below, and the blue-trimmed
red rose corset seen right lower. The boning pattern is different in each (Style B has
back panel diagonal
boning; see right, bottom image) but both styles
serve as a push-up style to elevate the bosom. The 1891
style with the diagonal boning at the back is also
shorter in back than the 1877 style. This corset was originally
designed for wear during horseback riding and therefore
is a good choice for posture support as well as for
people who will be active while wearing their corset.
The 1891 style is popular with historical interpreters
and with theatrical costumers because the shorter back
makes the corset feel less restrictive and comfortable,
especially for those who do not wear a corset often.
The 1877 style provides more hip coverage and is a
flattering choice on naturally curvy figures.
It also has a little more boning for firmer support.
Each looks lovely made
in our cotton-backed
satin, especially when embellished with outer bone casings
and made in
creative
fabrics such as her pink plaid Style B seen below
(this plaid fabric not always
available; please inquire about her and our inventory of special
fabrics). p>Note that the longer V-shape (sharp
point) of the front bottom edge renders a truly
wonderful front-view silhouette in this corset. Note also that care must be given when
selecting the overbust style to ensure the upper edge horizontal
line
of the corset will not show beneath the bodice of
light-weight
bridal gown or dress fabrics.
We will deduct $30
upon receipt of your order in our offices for a single
layer corset, however, note that we recommend the fully
double layer fabric and bonding especially for clients
with waistlines 40" and over.
This corset (as with any overbust style
ordered at ROMANTASY) includes an interim "muslin" fitting. The muslin is
a "rough cut" sample corset made in a single layer
of cotton muslin fabric with single (versus double)
boning. It provides you an opportunity in person in
San Francisco, or my mail to your location, to test
and adjust the fit before final construction.
